guterstoff ist ein Festival für experimentelle Musik und Performance. Es umfasst Installationen, Konzerte sowie digitale und interaktive Formate und legt einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf kollektive Arbeitsweisen. Im Mittelpunkt steht die freie Zusammenarbeit über Disziplin- und Genregrenzen hinweg sowie das gemeinsame Erproben und Entwickeln neuer künstlerischer Praktiken. So entstehen neue Arbeiten, die aus offenen Prozessen und dem Experiment heraus entwickelt werden.

Zentraler Ausgangspunkt der vierten Edition von guterstoff ist der Ort Bürgewald (Gemeinde Merzenich) – ein sogenannter Geisterort im rheinischen Braunkohlerevier, in dem sich Fragen von Strukturwandel, Energietransformation und demografischem Wandel verdichten. Bürgewald bildet dabei nicht nur den geografischen, sondern auch den inhaltlichen Fokus der künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung.

guterstoff versteht sich als Plattform für aufstrebende Künstler*innen. Im Mittelpunkt steht nicht die einzelne künstlerische Position, sondern der gemeinsame Entwicklungsprozess innerhalb einer interdisziplinären Gruppe.

WEN wir suchen:
Künstler*innen aller Disziplinen (z. B. Bildende Kunst, Musik, Performance, Theater, Tanz, Text). Es gibt keine Altersbegrenzung. Das Festival richtet sich jedoch an Einzelkünstler*innen, die am Anfang oder in der frühen Phase ihrer professionellen Laufbahn stehen. Bereits bestehende Gruppen oder Kollektive sind von der Teilnahme ausgeschlossen.

  • Arbeitsproben (max. 3 Links zu Online-Material)

  • ein kurzes Motivationsschreiben (max. 2000 Zeichen), in dem ihr eure Haltung zur interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit beschreibt, eure bisherigen Erfahrungen skizziert und darlegt, wie ihr euch die Arbeit in einer Gruppe vorstellt (Ergänzend oder alternativ als ca. 2-minütiges Video als Link).

WANN / WIE wir arbeiten:
Die Teilnahme umfasst eine zehntägige Residenz im September 2026. In diesem Zeitraum entwickelt ihr mit weiteren guterstoff-Künstler*innen eine neue Arbeit, die im September 2027 im Rahmen des guterstoff-Festivals in Bürgewald und Köln präsentiert wird. 

Daten: 

  • Residenz: 17. - 27.9.2026

  • Festival: 3. - 4.9.2027 (Probenwoche vom 29.08.-2.09.2027)

Wir setzen voraus, dass die Bewerber*innen über den gesamten Zeitraum an der Residenz teilnehmen. 

Wir bieten die Zusammenarbeit mit einem jungen, professionellen Team, ein Künstler*innenhonorar sowie die Übernahme von Reise- und Unterbringungskosten während der Arbeits- und Festivalphasen.

guterstoff is a festival for experimental music and performance. We feature installations, concerts, digital and interactive formats, with a special focus on collective working methods. The emphasis is on free collaboration across disciplinary and genre boundaries, as well as the joint testing and development of new artistic practices. This gives rise to new works that are developed from open processes and experimentation.

The fourth edition of guterstoff revolves around the village of Bürgewald (in the municipality of Merzenich) – a so-called ghost town in the Rhineland lignite mining area, where issues of structural transformation, energy transition and demographic change converge. Bürgewald builds the geographical focus of the artistic exploration as well as its central theme. 

guterstoff sees itself as a platform for emerging artists. The spotlight is on the collective development process within an interdisciplinary group rather than on individual artistic positions.

WHO we are looking for:

Artists from all disciplines (e.g. visual arts, music, performance, theatre, dance, text). There is no age limit. However, the festival is aimed at individual artists who are at the beginning or in the early stages of their professional careers. Existing groups or collectives are not eligible.

  • A short letter of motivation (max. 2000 characters) describing your approach and attitude towards interdisciplinary collaboration, outlining your previous experience, and explaining how you envision working in a group (additionally or alternatively, a 2-minute video via link).

WHEN / HOW we work:

Participation includes a ten-day residency in September 2026. During this period, you will develop a new project with other guterstoff artists, which will be presented in September 2027 as part of the guterstoff festival in Bürgewald and Cologne. 

Dates: 

  • Residency: 17–27 September 2026

  • Festival: 3–4 September 2027 (rehearsal week from  29 August – 2 September 2027)

We assume that applicants will participate for the entire duration of the residency. 

We offer collaboration with a young, professional team, an artist's fee and coverage of travel and accommodation costs during the work and festival phases.
